Louis Robitaille is in his first season with the New Jersey Devils organization and seventh year overall as a pro. The Montreal, QC-native has recorded two goals, seven assists and 250 penalty minutes in 56 games this season with Lowell.
You lead the team in penalty minutes for fighting yet you look like such a nice, happy go lucky guy on the bench. How can these opposite sides of you be explained to the fans? James - Chelmsford, MA
Well if you ask the other team they don’t think I’m a nice guy but I play hard and it’s my job. I’ve been doing it for seven years now and I have to do what I have to do to stay in the league. I’m a little agitator style player and this year I'm dropping the gloves a little more. It’s all fun and it’s part of the game and I enjoy it. So when I’m not going to enjoy it I’m going to retire but for now I love it.
How are you feeling going back to Hershey this weekend?
Note: This interview was conducted prior to the Devils' February road trip to Norfolk and Hershey
It’s a mixed feeling. I’m excited and I’m nervous. It’s really the first time I’m going to go back there and play against them. It’s going to be a special moment seeing all my buddies in the stands and I live there in the summer so my son’s going be at the game wearing his Devils jersey. So I know the crowd, I might get some boos; I might get some cheers so we’ll see what’s going to happen. I’m pretty sure after the first shift it’s going to be all boos.
After the end of the first game [in Newark], you had a very interesting handshake with your teammates. Can you explain to the fans how to do the "Louis Robitaille handshake"? Russell - Newark, NJ
It’s like in [the movie] Kingpin, it’s just a joke that me and Nick Palmieri do. I always stay back and cheer on everybody and me and Palm are the last two and we do something funny every game but it’s all for the fun of it. When we do it, that means we won the game so it’s all good. The last 10 games we’ve done the same one, but it changes.
What’s been your best moment in your hockey career?
Well I have two. Obviously my first NHL game was something special.
Note: Louis appeared in two games with the Washington Capitals during the 2005-06 season. When we won the [Calder] Cup in Hershey. You know it’s tough to win a cup. We went to the finals the second year and winning the Cup in the AHL was my best moment by far.
Who was your favorite player growing up?
Chris Nilan. You obviously have Ray Bourque and Mario Lemieux when I was growing up but my Dad was a friend of Chris Nilan. So I got to meet him a lot when I was young. And I had my number 30 jersey in Montreal. He was a fighter, so maybe that’s part of the reason I play that style. I’m not as tough as him, but I try to copy him a little bit.
