Devils Reel in OT Win over Sharks, 2-1
Gionta notches winner twenty seconds into overtime

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lowell Devils needed only twenty seconds of overtime to defeat the Worcester Sharks by a final score of 2-1 on Friday at the DCU Center.

It was the second time this season that the Devils registered an overtime winner against the Sharks just twenty seconds into extra time.  This it was Stephen Gionta providing the heroics.  Lowell took the opening faceoff of overtime into the Worcester zone, where the puck came up top for a slapshot from Mark Fraser. Sharks goalie Dimitri Patzold was able to make the initial save, but Ivan Khomutov tipped the rebound to Gionta, who pounded it across the goal line for his 13th goal of the season.

Scoring was at a premium in this contest, as the Devils took a 1-0 lead late in the opening period with their first power play of the game.  From the blueline, Richard Matvichuk worked the puck into the corner to Nicklas Bergfors, who quickly sent a pass into the slot for a Patrick Davis’ one-timer that knuckled past Patzold at 15:26.

Worcester needed only 1:13 to tie the score when a failed Lowell clearing attempt resulted in a point shot by Brad Staubitz and a deflection by Dennis Packard inside the near post of the Devils’ net.  That would be the only blemish on Frank Doyle’s 33-save performance, as neither team would score again through the forty-plus minutes remaining of regulation

Lowell finished the game 1-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
