PORTLAND, Maine – The Lowell Devils won their fifth consecutive game with a 5-1 defeat of the Portland Pirates on Saturday at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Nicklas Bergfors scored a pair of goals and goalie Jeff Frazee made 40 saves for the second straight game for his fourth win in a row. Bergfors’ third goal in as many games put the Devils up, 1-0, just 1:57 into the contest. Bergfors cut to the slot and took a pass from Chad Wiseman before skating toward the net and lifting a backhand into the top of the net. Bergfors would strike again at 15:25 on a solo end-to-end rush that he capped off with a tuck shot through the pads of Adam Dennis for his sixth goal of the season. The Devils would push their lead to 3-0 on a Pirates scoring chance in the Lowell zone. A Portland slapshot gone wide kicked out to center ice where Ryan Murphy began a 2-on-1 break. Faking the pass, Murphy took the shot himself, sniping the puck into the top corner with one second remaining until the intermission. Portland cut into Lowell’s lead at 12:43 of the second as Colin Murphy came crashing into the crease to bang a loose puck past Jeff Frazee, making it 3-1. The goal ended a Frazee’s scoreless streak at 119:09, spanning three starts. The Devils needed only 25 seconds to regain their three-goal cushion when Wiseman put back the rebound from Bergfors’ snapshot. Alexander Vasyunov added to Lowell’ goal total, scoring on his only power play chance at 2:51 of the third period.
