Devils Hand Bruins First Shootout Loss, 3-2
McKenna gets 19th win of year as Lowell rallies in third for win
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Mike McKenna made 33 saves through overtime and was a perfect 4-for-4 in the shootout to allow the Lowell Devils to rally for a 3-2 win over the Providence Bruins on Sunday at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.
Down by one heading into the third period, Matt Halischuk tied things up, 1-1, at 3:39 when he picked off an outlet pass at the near circle and beat Matt Dalton to the glove side for his fourth goal in the last four games.
The Devils needed only 63 seconds to strike again as Matt Cohen drove a slapshot toward the Bruins’ net and Patrick Davis was left alone at the far post to fire home the rebound and his 14th of the year.
Halischuk had a chance to give Lowell some insurance at 12:01 of the third when he was dragged down on a shorthanded breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. Dalton would wait out Halischuk and deny the wrist shot to the near post.
As the power play continued for Providence, Jamie Arniel accepted a cross-zone feed from Trent Whitfield and knuckled a one-timer through the pads of McKenna to even the contest at two with 6:18 left in regulation.
A scoreless overtime would send the game into the shootout where the Bruins were the last undefeated team in the AHL at 5-0. Davis and Nick Palmieri would each convert past the Dalton, while McKenna stopped all four shooters he faced to register his 19th win of the season. It was Lowell’s first shootout win since Oct. 23 at Springfield.
The Bruins owned a 1-0 lead after the first thanks to Jordan Knackstedt’s goal midway through the period. Zach Hamill was able to sneak a pass to Knackstedt that got him behind the defense for a backhander past the glove of McKenna.
