Sestito’s Big Night Leads Devils Over Sharks, 7-5
Sestito ties team record with four goals in the game
WORCESTER, Mass. – Tim Sestito’s empty-netter with 23 seconds left capped off a four-goal night and ruined the Worcester Sharks’ home opener as the Lowell Devils skated to a 7-5 victory on Saturday at the DCU Center. Sestito joined Matt Halischuk and David Clarkson in tying the Devils team record for goals scored in a game.
With Lowell clinging to a 5-4 lead midway through the third, Sestito completed his hat trick on a seemingly innocent play. Getting ready to head to the bench for a line change, Sestito sent in a weak shot from the blueline that skipped off the ice and past Tyson Sexmith.
After Worcester pulled the goalie late in the game and Stephen Zalewski scored to get the Sharks within one, it was Sestito hitting the vacated net to seal the win for Lowell.
Sestito tallied his first of the night 50 seconds after Matt Taormina put Lowell up, 2-1, with a power play goal. Brad Mills found his linemate alone in front for a quick one-timer through the five-hole of Sexsmith at 13:32 of the first.
The Sharks would cut the Devils’ lead with 1:19 until the first intermission when T.J. Trevelyan put back a rebound during a 5-on-3 power play.
Lowell answered back 1:19 into the middle period on Sestito’s second of the contest as the Devils center was again left uncovered in close to bang home a Nick Palmieri centering feed.
Patrick Davis registered assists on three of Sestito’s four goals. Worcester’s Logan Couture picked up a goal and three assists, including the marker that got his team with one at 7:54 of the third.
Gerald Coleman notched his first win in a Lowell Devils uniform with 38 saves on 43 shots. Michael Swift and Rob Davison also added goals for the Devils. Halischuk, the last Devils’ player to score four goals in a game, also completed the feat versus the Sharks on Oct. 8, 2008 at the Tsongas Arena.
