Devils Down Falcons in Shootout, 4-3
Seven-round shootout ends with Zharkov’s winner

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Vladimir Zharkov’s low wrist shot in seventh round of the shootout found its way past Devan Dubnyk and gave the Lowell Devils a 4-3 win over the Springfield Falcons on Saturday night at the MassMutual Center.

Trailing, 2-1, heading into the third period, the Devils struck twice in a span of 39 seconds to take their first lead of the game.  Lowell knotted the contest on the power play after Zharkov’s shot banked off the back dasher directly to Tyler Eckford, who fired it home for his third of the season.

Alexander Vasyunov then made it 3-2 for Lowell when he split the defense and flipped a backhander over the blocker of Dubnyk at 3:30.

Despite being outshot 10-3 in the third, two former Devils helped the Falcons tie things up on a 5-on-4 goal with 6:44 left in regulation.  Chris Minard was able to get a piece of Chad Wiseman’s point shot and tip it down under goalie Mike McKenna.

After a scoreless overtime, McKenna stopped five of seven Springfield shooters for his third win of the season.  Ben Walter, Eckford and Zharkov all converted past Dubnyk.

The Falcons used an early five-minute major power play to take a 1-0 lead at 5:50 of the first. Colton Fretter cut out from behind the net and was able to bat his own rebound out of the air and past McKenna.

With the Devils on the man-advantage later in the period, Colin McDonald made it 2-0 when he intercepted McKenna’s clearing attempt and sent it back toward the open net at 9:40.

Stephen Gionta cut Springfield’s lead in half at 9:33 of the second when his long wrister from the far circle got by the netminder for his third goal of the season.
