Devils Nipped By Pirates in OT, 3-2
Robitaille, Gionta tally goals for Lowell

PORTLAND, Maine – Stephen Gionta scored late in regulation to force overtime, but Mark Mancari’s power play goal with 23.8 seconds left in the extra session gave the Portland Pirates a 3-2 victory over the Lowell Devils on Friday at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

With the Pirates holding on to a 2-1 edge in the third, Gionta took advantage of a turnover in front of the Portland net, fluttering a turnaround shot over the goal line with 1:05 remaining in regulation.

Having stolen a point on the road, the Devils looked to complete the comeback in overtime, but a man-advantage would allow the Pirates to skate away with the win.  Tyler Ennis led the rush into Lowell zone and drew the defense before backhanding a pass to near post for Mancari to tip past the skate of Jeff Frazee.

Frazee stopped 16-of-19 shots in his second start of the season as the Devils’ winless streak stretched to three games (0-2-1-0).

Despite controlling play for most of the first period, the Devils quickly found themselves down 2-0 in second half the first period.  Portland was able to catch Lowell in a line change and take a 1-0 lead at 13:19 when Derek Whitmore was left uncovered to tip in TJ Brennan’s point shot.

The Pirates went up by two 1:36 later after Ennis intercepted an outlet pass and found Kyle Wanvig alone on the left post, where he one-timed the puck past a diving Frazee.

Louis Robitaille got Lowell on the board with 2:21 left until the intermission, stealing a cross-ice feed in the Pirates end and firing a over the blocker of an unsuspecting Jhonas Enroth.  The unassisted goal was Robitaille’s first of the season.
