LOWELL, Mass. – Brad Mills and the Lowell Devils’ penalty kill each scored their first two goals of the season in a 5-3 win over the Adirondack Phantoms on Wednesday at the Tsongas Arena. It was the first time in Lowell’s four-year history that they scored two shorthanded goals in one game. Holding on to a 1-0 lead after one, the Devils exploded for four goals in the second frame to own a 5-2 cushion going into the intermission. Nick Palmieri started things up when he picked up a loose puck on the back dasher and banked it off of goalie Nic Riopel and across the goal line. Stefan Legein got the Phantoms on the board 43 seconds later with a one-timer that sailed over the glove of Jeff Frazee, but Mills poked in his second of the night at 5:29 to put Lowell back up by two. After Alexander Vasyunov and David Laliberte traded goals midway through the middle period, the Devils used their second shorthanded goal of the game to own a three-goal edge heading into the break. Tyler Eckford led the 2-on-1 rush into the Adirondack zone and feathered a pass to the slot that Patrick Davis whizzed inside the near post. The Devils went up 1-0 with 3:02 left in the first period on their first shorthanded goal of the year. Mills blocked Marc-Andre Bourdon’s point shot and raced the puck the other way before sending a backhand into the top of net for his first marker of the season. Lowell had killed off seven straight Adirondack power plays until Jon Matsumoto converted for the Phantoms at 7:59 of the third to make the score 5-3. The Devils would hold on to end their three-game skid, as Frazee stopped 31 shots for his fifth win of the season.
