Devils Finish 2009 with 5-2 Win Over Monarchs
Frazee makes 30 saves for third win in a row
MANCHESTER, N.H. – Jeff Frazee made 30 saves for his third straight win and the Lowell Devils scored three times in first period to skate to a 5-2 victory over the Manchester Monarchs on New Year’s Eve at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
The Devils struck twice within the first four minutes of the game to jump out to the early lead. Patrick Davis got it started at 2:59 when he pulled wide on the Manchester defense before cutting in front and lifting a shot to the top corner.
Forty-six seconds later it was Tim Sestito controlling the puck on a 2-on-1 and beating Jeff Zatkoff through the five-hole for his tenth of the year.
Tyler Eckford made the score, 3-0, in favor of Lowell with 5:02 left in the first when his wrister from the near point deflected off a body and into the back of the net.
Lowell added to their lead midway through the second period as Alexander Vasyunov skated into the slot and beat Jonathan Bernier to the glove side for a power play goal and his ninth marker of the season.
Nathan Perkovich also converted on the man-advantage at 5:27 of the third to put the Devils up 5-0.
The Monarchs foiled Frazee’s shutout bid when Corey Elkins notched a shorthanded marker with 7:02 remaining in the period. Dave Meckler completed the scoring, batting in a loose puck as time expired in regulation.
