Lowell Prepares for Home Opening Weekend

With only one game on the schedule during the opening weekend of the 2009-10 AHL season, the Devils were defeated in overtime by the Sound Tigers, 4-3, on Saturday in Bridgeport. Lowell prepares this week for its home opener on Saturday versus the Worcester Sharks and a Sunday matinee versus the Portland Pirates at the Tsongas Arena.

Saturday, Devils 3 vs. SOUND TIGERS 4 (OT)
The Devils fought back from three deficits to force overtime, but it was Andrew MacDonald’s wristshot from the point at 2:54 of the extra session that gave the Sound Tigers the decision. Eric Castonguay and Ben Walter each notched a goal and an assist, while rookie defenseman Matt Taormina recorded two helpers. Tyler Haskins and Sean Bentivoglio led the Sound Tigers offense, both picking up a goal and two assists. Gerald Coleman suffered the loss, making 23 saves in his first start for Lowell.
Around the Horns
The Devils had six power play opportunities in the first period versus the Sound Tigers on Saturday… Three players recorded multi-point games for the Devils - Eric Castonguay (1g-1a-2pts), Matt Taormina (0g-2a-2pts) and Ben Walter (1g-1a-2pts) on Saturday - the most in a season opener in Lowell’s history…
Niclas Bergfors, Matt Halischuk and Rod Pelley all appeared on opening night, Oct. 3, for the New Jersey Devils. Bergfors gathered his first NHL assist in the contest…Castonguay notched his first AHL goal on Saturday versus Bridgeport…Matt Toarmina recorded two assists in the first game of his first full pro season.
Coming Up
The Devils begin the home portion of their schedule on Saturday versus the Worcester Sharks. In last year’s home opener, Matt Halischuk scored a team-record four goals in the contest to help give his team a 6-4 win over the Sharks. Lowell was 5-4-1-0 against Worcester last season with nine of the ten games being decided by two goals or less.
Lowell wraps up its home weekend on Sunday afternoon against the Portland Pirates. The Devils went 2-2-0-1 at home versus the Pirates last season and 4-5-0-1 overall. Portland lost in its only game over opening weekend, a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Springfield Falcons.
